Let's start simple. I always grab enough books for every child in the group, plus an extra one for me. I let my students take their guided reading books home each night and the extra copy comes in handy if someone leaves their copy at home after the first night. Timers. Important side note about my Reading Groups: From September through end of January, we focus on reading skills and strategies from Tuesday through Friday each week. I take a lot of time at the beginning of the year to truly dig in DEEP to each of the guided reading books that we are reading. 1 - Reading A to Z. Reading A to Z is by far the most affordable place to find books for guided reading. It does cost a little over $100 per year per classroom. While that sounds like a lot, you have access to hundreds of books that you can print in color or grayscale. But back to today's topic - the essential components of a guided reading lesson.
