I installed the SSD, cleared the CMOS, and set the boot order so the SSD was the boot drive and the problem drive was disabled as a boot device. I then installed windows on the SSD, and formatted the problem drive. I can tell you from experience that my DS3L's boot just fine using bootable thumb drives created with the HP boot drive utility.
